New keys in your hand: a sensible front-door security check when you move in
Picking up the keys to a new home in E17 is exciting, but you rarely know how many copies are floating about. Previous tenants, their friends, cleaners, tradespeople and the odd neighbour may all have had a key at some point, which is why a lock change is one of the first things we recommend when you move into a bought house or a rented flat where your tenancy agreement allows it. A fresh cylinder or a new mortice means only you and the people you choose hold working keys.
When we visit we start by looking at what you actually have. A typical British front door carries a Yale-type nightlatch for everyday use plus a mortice deadlock for security, and many home insurers specifically ask for a 5 lever mortice deadlock to BS3621 standard. On a uPVC or composite door the equivalent is a euro cylinder inside a multipoint mechanism, where anti-snap protection and a TS007 3-star rated cylinder make a real difference against lock snapping, a method burglars favour on weaker cylinders.
We will tell you honestly whether your existing locks are fine, whether a straightforward cylinder swap is enough, or whether a full door lock change gives you better peace of mind. If you are a tenant, we always suggest checking with your landlord, letting agent or managing agent first, and we are happy to carry out a professional lock change service that satisfies both parties. Call 020 3757 6115 and we will talk through what your particular door needs before we quote.
