Why Patio and French Door Locks Fail — and What We Find in Walthamstow
[4] The most common fault we attend on uPVC patio sliders is a failed gearbox inside the multipoint lock body. The gearbox is the mechanical heart that drives the hooks, rollers, and locking points along the door edge when you lift the handle. After several years of daily use — particularly on doors that have dropped slightly on their hinges — the cam inside the gearbox strips or seizes. The handle then either spins freely or becomes stiff enough to damage the internal mechanism if forced. On French doors the picture is slightly different: the French door mortice lock set fitted at the meeting stile is frequently neglected because it is assumed the multipoint lock on each leaf is sufficient. In reality, without a properly functioning mortice lock for French doors at the rebate, the two leaves can flex apart under pressure even when the multipoint hooks are engaged.
A secondary problem we see regularly in older properties around the Walthamstow Central area is corrosion of the euro cylinder that operates the multipoint system from the outside. Cylinders exposed to years of rain — especially those facing north or west — develop internal rust that makes the key increasingly difficult to turn. Left too long, the cylinder can seize completely, leaving the household locked out. We carry a range of anti-snap, anti-pick euro cylinders on the van as standard stock, so a cylinder swap can usually be completed in a single visit without the need to source parts separately.
